Women's Hoops Falls To Kentucky State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Poor free throw shooting and shaky ball control on Saturday afternoon sent Sonoma State to a 64-54 defeat at the hands of Kentucky State in the second game of the 2008 Hampton Inn & Suites Basketball Classic in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves see their losing streak extended to five in a row as they go to 3-5 on the season.  The Thorobrettes improve to 5-1 with the victory.

The Thorobrettes came out of the game fast, taking an 11-2 lead in the first three and a half minutes of the game.  Slowly, Sonoma State chipped away, pulling even at the seven minute mark on a layup by Kristin Montanari.  Tied at 23, the Seawolves would take a two-point halftime lead when Carissa Meade sank a jumper with seconds remaining. 

Sonoma led 29-28 with 15:01 left, before a quick jumper by Cortney Matthewis regained the lead for Kentucky State.  They would not trail again, slowly building their lead to double digits in the waning minutes.

Sonoma State got a game-high 11 points from Jennifer Russo and eight each from the trio of Stephanie Barnes, Lauren Redfield, and Kristin MontanariAly Conway contributed with a career-high nine rebounds as the Seawolves held a healthy 44-35 advantage on the boards.

The would, however, be unable to recover from 21 turnovers and just 40% (10-for-25) shooting from the free throw line. 

Kentucky State had five players in double digits, led by 16 from Latrice Watkins.  Kiarra Morgan (10 points, 9 rebounds) and Jessica Vaughn (10 points, 8 rebounds) also had solid outings. 

The Seawolves are back in action tomorrow afternoon when they take on Grand Canyon.  The Antelopes weere a 64-54 winner over Chico State in Saturday's first game.

'Lopes Pull Away From 'Cats In First Game Of Hampton Classic

Grand Canyon (4-4) got a stellar performance from Rosalyn Nelson on Saturday to beat Chico State (4-4) 64-54 in the first game of the 2008 Hampton Inn & Suites Classic in Rohnert Park.  Nelson finished with 21 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and six steals in a nice all-around performance.
