Men's Hoops Denied At The Buzzer By Stanislaus

Ben Washington
Ben Washington led the way with 19 points on Saturday night
TURLOCK, Calif-  Ben Washington's potential game-winning shot with two seconds left was blocked to send Sonoma State to a 78-75 defeat on Saturday night at Cal State Stanislaus.  The loss eliminates the Seawolves from CCAA Tournament contention as they fall to 10-14, 6-12 CCAA.  The Warriors improve to 6-19, 5-13 CCAA.

The Seawolves led for most of the first half and expanded their lead to as many as ten in the second.  Stanislaus was able to chip away and eventually took their first lead of the second half at the 6:40 mark.

SSU jumped back in front by a 75-74 score with just over two minutes left on a three-pointer by Jay Flores.  Those, however, would be the last points the Seawolves would score.  Stanislaus went ahead on a Heath Colvin jumper with 1:36 remaining, then got a rebound from an errant Keith Garner attempt 30 seconds later.

SSU fouled to put Rick Cardoso at the line and he complied with the Seawolves' wishes by missing both free throws.   Slowing things down for a last shot attempt, Sonoma got a good opportunity on a layup from Washington, but Cardoso was able to swat the shot and crush any hopes of a Seawolf victory.

Washington led the Seawolves with 19 points for the second night in a row.  He was 7-of-10 from the field and had a team-high five assists.  Andrew Kochevar and Mike Nelson were both in double digits as well with 11 points apiece.

Heath Colvin led the Warriors with 21 points while Cardoso topped out with a 16 point-12-rebound double-double.

The Seawolves will bring their season to a close next week when they host Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino.
