Seawolves Win Another Thriller, Force Game Two

Kris Haycock slides in with the game-winning run
Kris Haycock beats the throw for the game-winning run
CHICO, Calif-  Ian Bridges singled home Kris Haycock with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth as Sonoma State beat Chico State 4-3 to force a second and final championship game for the CCAA title.  The Seawolves trailed 3-2 entering the ninth before clutch hitting and base running led to yet another comeback in this incredible conference tournament.

The Seawolves got out to an early 2-0 lead when Travis Babin launched his second homer of the tournament, in the second inning.  Kevin Asselin was solid, mowing down the Wildcat batters before encountering trouble in the eighth.  That's when a potential double play ball that would have helped the Seawolves out of a jam, hit the lip of the infield grass and scooted past Babin, the third baseman.  That would set up a two-run jack for Josh Meagher, which gave Chico a 3-2 lead.

In the ninth, Babin went down looking to lead off the inning.  Ryan Averkieff then came up big, lacing a double to left field.  Nick Nosti grounded to second for the second out, moving Averkieff over to third, before Haycock singled up the middle, scoring Averkieff and tying the game.  Haycock was able to steal second and move in to scoring position for Bridges, who smashed a ball to right.  There was a play at the plate, but Haycock beat the throw with a head first slide.
