Matt Means Taken By San Diego Padres In 37th
Matt Means was a First Team All-American this season
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State southpaw
Matt Means was selected by the San Diego Padres on Friday in the 37th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. He is the fourth Sonoma State player to hear his name called in the draft.
Means had an incredible senior season in which he became just the second pitcher in school history to earn First Team All-America status. The Mountain View native went 10-2 with a 1.85 ERA. He tossed a team-high 102 innings and turned in the second-most strikeouts in school history, 93.
Means was a First Team All-CCAA and First Team All-West Region pick in 2008 as well. A four-year performer for the Seawolves, Means was 15-9 in his SSU career.
It is the second time the Padres have drafted an SSU pitcher in the past two years. Bryan Oland was a 24th round selection of San Diego in last year's draft. He is currently pitching for their Fort Wayne affiliate (Low-A).
