Travis Babin was selected by the New York Mets on Friday in the 16th round of the Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. The junior from Santa Clarita was drafted as a pitcher.
Babin was 4-0 with a 4.25 ERA and a team-high four saves in 29.2 innings of work this season. He had 33 strikeouts and limited opponents to a .277 average.
He made his biggest impact late in the year as the team's starting third baseman. Taking over in the CCAA Tournament, where he would go on to earn Tournament MVP honors, Babin started the final 11 games of the season at the hot corner. For the season, Babin batted .329 with six home runs and 29 RBIs. All six of his home runs came in the post-season.
Babin is the first SSU player to be drafted by the New York Mets since Bryan Rogers in 1988. Tim Worthington signed a free agent contract with the Mets in 2003.
