Five Seawolves Earn WWPA All-Academic Honors

The Seawolves took care of business in and out of the pool this spring
LOS ANGELES, Calif-  Five members of the Sonoma State women's water polo team were named All-Academic by the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) earlier this week.  Holly Armijo, Andrea Brookbank, Brooke Smith, Kiane Taparra, and Lauran Zambruski were honored for their work in the classroom. 

Holly Armijo, a freshman from Alameda, sported a 3.77 GPA in addition to her 14 goals and seven assists for SSU in '08.  She appeared in all 31 of the Seawolves' games.

Andrea Brookbank, a junior Business Administration major from San Jose, had five goals and ten assists this spring.  She also played in all 31 matches.

Brooke Smith, a sophomore kinesiology major from Pismo Beach, started all 31 games and produced three goals, five assists, and five steals.

Kiane Taparra, a sophomore kinesiology major from Mililani, Hawaii, saw action in 20 games.  She had two goals and two assists for the Seawolves.

Lauran Zambruski, a senior from Poway, scored three goals and played in 22 games.  She ended her career ranked in the top ten in steals and field blocks.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State's Samantha Burchard capped off a fantastic senior season last week when it was announced that she was selected to the All-Western Water Polo Association Second Team.

LOS ANGELES, Calif-  Senior Jenna Bole scored in sudden death overtime to lift Sonoma State to a 9-8 win over Cal State Monterey Bay at the WWPA Championships on Saturday in Los Angeles.  With the win, the Seawolves claim seventh place in the WWPA.  They end the season with a record of 14-17.  The Otters close out the year at 17-14.

LOS ANGELES, Calif-  Cal State San Bernardino's Kaitlin Hartman scored with 5:32 remaining in the fourth quarter to break a 7-7 tie and it held as the Coyotes defeated Sonoma State 8-7 in the first consolation semifinal of the 2008 WWPA Championships.  With the loss, the Seawolves will take on Cal State Monterey Bay in the Seventh Place game tomorrow at 11:30 am.

LOS ANGELES, Calif-  Third-seeded UC San Diego edged Sonoma State 8-6 on Friday afternoon in WWPA Tournament action from the campus of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles.  The defeat sends the Seawolves (13-16) into the consolation bracket where they will face Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.

LOS ANGELES, Calif-  A strong defensive effort helped No. 6 Sonoma State to an 8-5 win over No. 11 Cal State East Bay in game two of the WWPA Women's Water Polo Championship on Friday at the Burns Recreation and Aquatics Center in Los Angeles.  The Seawolves will now play UC San Diego at 2:45 on Friday.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The seeds for this weekend's Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Tournament were announced on Monday and Sonoma State will enter the event as the No. 6 seed.  That brings up a first round match against Cal State East Bay, a team the Seawolves beat on Friday.
