POMONA, Calif- Sonoma State's
Connor Olson defeated two more opponents on Friday to reserve himself a spot in the 2009 Wilson/ITA Men's Tennis Regional Championship match for the singles title on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Cal Poly Pomona. Olson and his partner, Taylor BIanco, have also advanced to the doubles semifinals that will take place on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Olson, the No. 2 seed of the singles tournament, defeated Chapman Chan of UC San Diego 6-3, 6-0 to move on to the semifinals against Erik Elliot, also of UC San Diego. Olson took care of business in that match, taking the 6-4, 6-2 victory to put him into the title match against No. 1 seed Agnel Peter of BYU-Hawaii.
The pairing of Olson and Bianco defeated host Cal Poly Pomona's Kevin Griffin and Shane McNulty in the doubles quarterfinals (8-2).
In the consolation round of 16, Stewart Hutton,
Scott Gaynor and Bryce Keefer all defeated their opponents to move on to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals, teammates Gaynor and Hutton faced off as Gaynor got the upper hand and defeated Hutton 9-8 (1). Keefer moves on to the consolation semifinals Saturday at 9 a.m.
