Seawolves Win To Force Winner-Take-All Final

Kris Haycock
Kris Haycock picked a good time to hit his first homer of the season
KEIZER, Ore-  There's the easy way...and then there's the Seawolf way.  On Saturday evening, the Seawolves continued their unbelievable run through the post-season with a heart-stopping 4-3 win over top seed UC San Diego at the regionals in Keizer, Oregon.  The victory sets up a winner-take-all final tomorrow between the Seawolves and Tritons, tomorrow at noon.

The Seawolves have now won three straight games while being on the brink of elimination and all of their victories have come with their comebacks in the last inning.

For a team that has stayed away from the long ball all season, it would be a pair of two-run home runs that provided all their scoring.

Sonoma took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning when Ian Bridges blasted a long shot to left center field, his fifth homer of the year.

That lead would hold until the sixth inning when the Tritons, ranked No. 2 in the nation, rallied for a pair of runs on four hits.

In the ninth inning and facing elimination, the Seawolves dug a little deeper in to their bag of tricks.  Wasting little time against all-league closer Guido Knudson, Joe Slater started the rally with a single up the middle.  The next batter, Kris Haycock, then hit a towering opposite field shot to left field that barely cleared the left fielder's glove and the left field fence.  Not a bad time for the senior to hit his first home run of the year.

Said Haycock, "I wasn't sure I got enough to get it out of here, but I thought it had enough to get past the left fielder."

Alberto Rolon, the team's ace from 2006 who has struggled this season, got the start and pitched brilliantly, allowing three hits in five and two thirds of an inning before turning it over to freshman Thomas Lee.  Getting his first taste of post-season play, Lee did not disappoint, throwing three shutout innings to earn his first collegiate win.

Said head coach John Goelz after the game, "Thomas red-shirted last year and might have been a little frustrated not to have been a part of the championship run.  Now it's Thomas Lee's turn."

Lee got the Seawolves to within one out of victory, before handing it over to Troy Brown, who struck out Brandon Gregorich to end it.
