Morgan Rodriguez and Lindsay Brown were honored this week
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Senior Morgan Rodriguez and junior Lindsay Brown have been announced as the 2008-09 recipients of the Sonoma State University Alumni Association's Outstanding Male and Female Athletes of the Year.
A senior on this year's baseball squad, Rodriguez, a native of Brentwood, is majoring in Communications. He had a fantastic 2009 season on the mound, earning Second Team All-CCAA honors after going 5-1 with a 2.74 ERA. A two-year performer for the Seawolves, Rodriguez was a part of the 2008 conference and west region championship squad as well.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Rodriguez has his own show on the school's radio station, KSUN, and he acts as a mentor to young men as a Sunday school teacher.
Brown, a junior from Napa, had a tremendous fall season for the Seawolves in 2008. In leading the Seawolves to a 23-7 record and their first NCAA Division II Championship Tournament appearance since 1993, Brown was named Second Team All-CCAA. A Sociology major also minoring in Spanish, Brown became the school's all-time leader in assists late in the season.
The Vice President for Community Outreach for SSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (S.A.A.C.), Brown also stays busy with a myriad of extracurricular activities, including as a coach of youth volleyball and as a discussion group leader at a local retirement community.
As recipients of the award, both Brown and Rodriguez will receive a framed certificate and a $1,000 athletic scholarship provided by the SSU Alumni Association. To be considered for the award, and the accompanying scholarship, a student-athlete must submit a one to two page essay describing his or her outstanding achievements relative to intercollegiate competition, academics, and community service.
A long-time supporter of Intercollegiate Athletics at Sonoma State University, the SSU Alumni Association established the Outstanding Male and Female Student-Athlete of the Year awards three years ago.
Previous recipients of the award include Andrew Bailey (2007 and 2008), Danae Wellander (2008), and Christina Maher (2007).
