Softball Advances To West Region Championship

ARCATA, Calif- Behind another stellar performance from staff ace Lindsay Emmel, the Sonoma State softball team defeated No. 4 Cal State Stanislaus Saturday afternoon at Humboldt State Softball Stadium, 5-2, to advance to the NCAA West Regional Championship Game for the first time in program history. Sonoma will have to be beaten twice in tomorrow's Championship round due to the double elimination format.

CCAA Pitcher of the Year Lindsay Emmel was on top of her game again today, logging nine innings, surrendering only two hits, and striking out nine Warrior batters. Emmel has now pitched sixteen innings, thrown two complete games, and has allowed only four hits in West Region play.

The Seawolves were able to take the early lead in the top of the first, as Jessica Gaumnitz allowed two singles and issued two walks. Ashley Sardina and Nicole Cordova recorded singles, and Simone Brandalise walked to load the bases. Jessica Abelia was then walked by Gaumnitz, allowing Sardina to cross home plate from third giving Sonoma a 1-0 advantage. Gaumnitz would settle down after a shaky first inning, retiring 12 of the next 14 batters.

The Warriors immediately answered in their home half of the second, as Alyssa Guzman smoked her third homerun of the year over the left field fence, notting the game at 1-1. Five batters later, Cal State Stanislaus took the lead on their second solo shot of the game, this one supplied by Meghan Franksen.

Gaumnitz appeared to be cruising until the top of the sixth, when Kayla Ledford launched the third homerun of the contest over the left field fence, tying the ballgame at 2-2. Stanislaus inserted Jennifer Arnold immediately after the Ledford homrun.

Emmel and Arnold would pitch solid for the next three innings, until Sonoma State was able to break through in the top of the ninth.

With two outs and pinch runner Nikki Jaime on first base, Brittany Martinez hit a soft groudball up the middle that was fielded by center fielder Alyssa Guzman who then air-mailed the ball over catcher Brittany Balanesi's head, allowing Jaime to score. Sonoma added two more runs on singles by Ashley and Emmel to clinch the 5-2 victory.

ROHNERT PARK, Calif- With rain falling in the Sonoma Valley and more in the forecast on Friday, the highly-anticipated softball series between Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay has been shifted to Saturday and Sunday. Saturday's doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. and the Seawolves and Otters will wrap up their four-game series on Sunday with a twinbill, beginning at Noon.

HAYWARD, Calif- Off to one of their best starts in program history, Sonoma State continued to show its offensive power, blasting five home runs in two games against the Cal State East Bay Pioneers on Saturday, en route to 3-2 and 9-2 victories at Pioneer Field. The Seawolves have won five straight games, and have also won nine of their last 10 ballgames, improving to 15-4 overall and 10-2 in CCAA play. The Pioneers fell to 4-12.

HAYWARD, Calif- Ashley Britton had five hits, including three doubles, and Janelle Arnold added four hits and a home run to highlight a huge offensive day by Sonoma State, giving the Seawolves 8-0 and 12-5 victories over host Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon at Pioneer Field in Hayward. Sonoma State, who is receiving votes in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Division II poll, improve to 13-4 overall and 8-2, one game out of first place in the CCAA standings. The Pioneers fall to 4-10.

SANTA ROSA, Calif- Rochelle Vanyi hit the go-ahead home run in the bottom of sixth inning and pitcher Samantha Lipperd pitched out of a huge bases loaded jam with no outs to preserve the 4-3 victory over UC San Diego in game two of Sunday's doubleheader at Santa Rosa Junior College. Sonoma State fell to the Tritons in the opener, 2-0. The Seawolves improve to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in the CCAA. UCSD falls even at 8-8 overall and 6-6 in conference play.

SANTA ROSA, Calif- Pitchers Julianne Martinez and Samantha Lipperd combined to allow just two runs and LeeAnn Stroud hit a home run in game two as Sonoma State swept visiting UC San Diego, 3-0 and 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at Santa Rosa Junior College. The Seawolves have won four straight games, improving to 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the CCAA. The Tritons fell to 7-7 (5-5 CCAA).

WALNUT CREEK, Calif-  For the second consecutive week, a Sonoma State freshman has been named the Worth/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Pitcher of the Week.  Last week it was Samantha Lipperd, this week it is Julianne Martinez, who went 3-0 at Cal State Dominguez Hills over the weekend.
