ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State women's water polo head coach
Coralie Simmons has been named the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches' (ACWPC) Division II National Coach of the Year. Simmons led the Seawolves to their best-ever finish in the WWPA Championship Tournament in 2009.
Though the team would finish 12-20 on the year, the Seawolves played one of the toughest schedules in the country, of any team at any level. Nearly all of the Seawolves' losses came to teams ranked in the National Top 20 and the Seawolves enjoyed wins over nationally-ranked teams like Santa Clara and UC San Diego.
After beating UC San Diego for the first time in school history during the first round of the WWPA Championships, the Seawolves battled Cal State Bakersfield, falling by just one goal in the third place game.
Simmons, a former National Player of the Year at UCLA and a silver medalist in the 2000 Olympic Games, is currently serving as an assistant coach on the US National Women's Team.
