ROHNERT PARK, Calif- A total of 58 Sonoma State University student-athletes were named All-Academic during the 2008-09 season. 44 of them earned their honors through the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), while 14 others made the grade despite playing on a team that is not a conference member.
"The CCAA All-Academic honors for our student-athletes demonstrate the tremendous effort they put forward in the classroom on behalf of Sonoma State University. As an NCAA Division II program, academic excellence by our student-athletes is our top priority and we are very proud of their accomplishment," said Sonoma State Director of Athletics
Bill Fusco.
Of all conference schools in the CSU system, Sonoma State had the highest percentage of students attaining All-Academic status. Though Cal State Stanislaus had more total honorees (47 to 44), the Warriors sponsor three more CCAA sports than Sonoma State. SSU's average of 4.4 student-athletes per sport trailed only UC San Diego in the 11-member association.
In order to earn All-Academic status, a student-athletes must maintain a grade point average of 3.4 or higher over a course load of at least 24 units. They also must be a letter winner on one of the Seawolves' 13 intercollegiate athletic teams.
Ten Sonoma State teams compete as members of the CCAA, but three (men's tennis, water polo, and women's golf) are independents.
The women's cross country team has the most All-Academic student-athletes with 12.
