LA JOLLA, Calif- Looking for a win to stay alive in the hunt for a California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Championship Tournament berth, Sonoma State clashed with 14th-ranked UC San Diego, but the Tritons led from start to finish en route to a convincing 68-52 victory over the visiting Seawolves. UCSD clinched the CCAA regular season title for the second straight year while improving 23-3 and 18-3 in conference play. Sonoma State lost its fourth straight game, falling to 10-16 and 8-13, as the Seawolves will now need some help to get into the post-season.

The Tritons got off to a quick start in the early going, jumping out to a 15-4 lead just eight minutes into the game. UC San Diego then stretched its lead out to double-digits before Sonoma State chipped away at the lead, coming to within six points after a three-pointer by senior Stephanie Barnes to bring the score to 15-9. The Tritons then got back out to at least a 10 point lead on several occasions before taking a 13-point lead into halftime at 35-22.

It was much more of the same for the Seawolves in the second half, as they could only get to within 11 points at one point in the final 20 minutes as the nationally-ranked Tritons cruised through the second half to nab 68-52 victory and the regular season title.

Senior Jennifer Russo led the Seawolves with nine points and added three rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Roxanne Rentschler netted eight points. The Seawolves shot 37.3 percent from the floor (19-51) while holding the Tritons to 42.1 percent on 24-of-57 shooting.

Chelsea Carlisle led all scorers with just 11 points as Tiffany Hunter added 10 points and nine rebounds.

Sonoma State will wrap up the regular season on Friday at Cal State East Bay, tipping off at 5:30 p.m. Currently sitting at ninth place in the CCAA standings, the Seawolves will have to defeat the Pioneers on Friday and then rely on Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Dominguez Hills to lose both of their games this weekend in order to be considered for the eighth spot in the conference tournament.

Box Score: #14 UC San Diego 68, Sonoma State 52
