CHICO, Calif-
Spencer Heller shot a 77 and
Tess Russell backed up yesterday's 78 with an 80, to lead the 23rd-ranked Sonoma State women's golf team to the team title at the InterWest Chico State Classic at Butte Creek Country Club. It is the second team championship in the last three events for the Seawolves.
Heading into Tuesday's final round action with a healthy eight-stroke lead, the Seawolves needed to put up another consistent day to finish off the competition. They did just that, as Heller (78), Russell (80), and
Tara Mortimeyer (80) finished in the top ten overall.
Russell, the Seawolves' leader on Monday continued her fine play to finish fifth overall at 78-80--158. It was the second top-five finish in Russell's two-year career at Sonoma State.
Brittany Carrera (78-85--163) finished 14th and
KelliAnn Masterson (83-84--167) placed 21st to round out the team.
Following the Seawolves (639) in the team competition were Western Washington (648), Cal State Monterey Bay (648), and Grand Canyon (653).
Sonoma State returns to the links next weekend when they compete in the CSUMB Otter Invitational at Bayonet Golf Course in Seaside.
