Women's Water Polo Drops Pair Of Games Saturday

DAVIS, Calif- Holly Armijo, Laurel Stricklin and Kelsey Lowy all scored for Sonoma State on Saturday, but the Seawolves ran into a pair of national powers at the Aggie Shootout, hosted by UC Davis. Sonoma State lost to Cal State Bakersfield 13-2 and host UC Davis 15-1. With the losses, the Seawolves fall to 2-13.

Sonoma State's loss to Cal State Bakersfield was the first to a team not ranked in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top 20 poll; however, CSUB is receiving votes in the poll. All of the Seawolves' other losses have come against the top 20.

Armijo and Stricklin both scored for SSU in the opening game of the Aggie Shootout and Gina Uliana made seven saves. Lowy was the only other goal scorer for the Seawolves on Saturday, scoring the lone goal in a 15-1 loss to the hosts, UC Davis, who is ranked 15th this week. Uliana also made seven saves.

Sonoma State will travel to Hayward next Saturday (Mar. 13) to take on WWPA-rival Cal State East Bay at Noon.

Laurel Stricklin Named To ACWPC All-America Team
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- For the second time in school history, a member of the women's water polo team has been selected to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) 2010 Women's All-American Team. Laurel Stricklin, who broke several school records in her final year as a Seawolf, was named to the All-American team. It was announced Thursday.

WWPA Honors Six Water Polo Student-Athletes
LOS ANGELES, Calif- As the summer rolls on, the awards continue to roll on in for the Sonoma State women’s water polo team. It was announced on Thursday that six student-athletes were named to the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) All-Academic team – four of which were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic team last week.

Four Seawolves Named ACWPC All-Academic
ROHNERT PARK, Calif- For their efforts in the classroom as well as their competitive contribution in the pool, three Sonoma State student-athletes have been named to the 2010 Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic Team. Holly Armijo, Sarah Clauss, Amanda Myers and Lindsay Rangel were part of a list of 297 women's water polo student-athletes nationwide to be recognized.

Water Polo Finishes 7th At WWPA Championship
BAKERSFIELD, Calif- Coming off two tough losses, the Sonoma State water polo squad went toe-for-toe with Cal State San Bernardino in a hard fought battle.  The No. 7-seed Seawolves came up big in the final quarter to defeat the No. 8-seed Coyotes 7-5 in the final match of the season for both teams.  Sonoma State finishes the year at 9-27 overall against a schedule that featured a strong number of ranked opponents.

Water Polo Comes Up Short Against CSU East Bay
BAKERSFIELD, Calif- Neither Sonoma State or Cal State East Bay lead by more than two goals, but the Pioneers pulled ahead late in the fourth quarter to defeat the Seawolves 13-10 on day two of the Wester Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championship Tournament. With the loss, Sonoma State falls to 8-27 on the season and will play for seventh place on Sunday against WWPA-rival Cal State San Bernardino at 10:30 a.m.

Water Polo Comes Up Short In Quarterfinals, 10-7
BAKERSFIELD, Calif- The Sonoma State water polo squad is saving its best stuff for the post season.  After taking an opening round victory against Chapman University, the No. 7-seed Seawolves came close to pulling off a huge upset over No. 2-seed UC San Diego on Friday.  The Tritons held on to a 10-7 victory to advance to the semifinals on Saturday.  Sonoma State will face the winner of Saturday's match between No. 3-seed Cal State East Bay and No. 9-seed Cal State Monterey Bay.

Water Polo Handles Chapman 15-8 To Open At WWPA
BAKERSFIELD, Calif- Riding in on a regular season finale victory, No. 7-seed Sonoma State spilled first blood at the Western Water Polo Association Championship defeating No. 10-seed Chapman University 15-8 to open competition.  Receiving solid contributions from up and down the roster, nine players scored for the Seawolves who led for the entire match.  Sonoma State will continue to build on their game one success as they advance to the quarterfinals to take on No. 2-seed UC San Diego.  First sprint is scheduled for 3:40 p.m.
