SANTA ROSA, Calif- Thanks to her best individual finish this season,
Brittany Carrera carried Sonoma State with a nine-over 153 to a first place finish in the Sonoma State Women's Spring Invitational on Tuesday at the Fountaingrove Golf & Country Club in hail and rain-soaked Santa Rosa.
Carrera led the field of 35 golfers after the first round on Monday by five strokes, carding a 70 after 18 holes. Fighting the inclement weather conditions on Tuesday, she fell out of first place and ended the second round with an 83, tying in second place with Cal State Monterey Bay's Courtney Soekland. Soekland carded a 76-77--153 in the two day tournament. The individualist medal honor went to Hawaii-Hilo's Dayna Bersamin after shooting a 76-74--150.
The Seawolves, who finished the tournament with a 637, 15 strokes ahead of second-place Western Texas, saw
Spencer Heller (79-81--160) and
Tara Mortimeyer (77-83--160) finished for a tie in eighth place, while
Chelsa Helget-Robinson ended the tournament with a 83-86--169.
Brittani Markowski, who competed as an individual, shot a 82-85--167 in her outing.
It is the third tournament victory for Sonoma State this season as they shot a 304-333--637. Western Texas (327-325--625) finished second and Academy of Art University came in third (329-328--657). Hawaii-Hilo (709), Cal State East Bay (768) and Dominican University (928) rounded out the six teams competing. Cal State Monterey Bay's six players competed as individuals.
Sonoma State will await word on their postseason fate when the NCAA Division II West Region selections will be announced on Apr. 26.
