MESA, Ariz- The Sonoma State women's golf continues to erase any pre-conceived notions about how a newly added sport is supposed to act. On Saturday afternoon, in just their third season of existence, the Seawolves closed out their first ever trip to the NCAA Division II Championship with a fifth place finish.
With a cumulative score of 313-305-305-313--1236, the Seawolves finish up 16 strokes behind second place Rollins (1220), 15 behind Florida Southern (1221), and 14 behind Tarleton State (1222). Ranked 14th in the latest GolfWorld/NGCA Coaches' Poll, Sonoma finished ahead of national heavyweights like No. 2 Grand Valley State, No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay, and No. 9 Indianapolis.
Leading the way for the Seawolves on Saturday was senior All-American
Brittany Carrera. She shot a 74 in the final round to finish at 79-76-77-74--306, good enough for 13th.
The Seawolves' overall leader in the tournament was freshman
Spencer Heller, who fired a 77-76-73-77--303 to place 10th, and hopefully cement an All-American nod of her own.
Chelsa Helget (78-79-79-81--317, 36th),
Tara Mortimeyer (74-77-76-86--323, 47th), and
Tess Russell (79-76-88-81--324, 49th) rounded out the Sonoma contingent.
Nova Southeastern cruised to a 40-stroke lead in the championship to claim their second straight national title.
