Men's Golf Finishes Fourth At NCAA Championship

Patrick Bauer paced the Seawolves to a fourth place finish at nationals.
NOBLESVILLE, Ind- Despite fighting strong winds for much of the day, the Sonoma State men's golf team held its own, firing a 309 in Friday's final round to finish fourth at the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's Golf Championships, held at Sagamore Golf Club in Noblesville, Ind. The Seawolves, who came into the tournament as the defending national champions, finished just 10 strokes behind this year's champion, Florida Southern.

Rebounding from an illness that affected four of the five Sonoma State golfers earlier in the week, the Seawolves managed to remain within striking distance of the national title for much of the four-round tournament. Following a ninth place finish after the first 18 holes on Tuesday, SSU remained in the top five for the remaining 54 holes, led by the 13th place finish of Patrick Bauer, who was named to the Division II PING! All-West Region team earlier this week. Bauer fired a 302, including a six-over 78 performance on Friday.

Jeremy Wendelken finished one stroke behind Bauer at 303, followed by Janssen Todd's 311. Ryan Carter carded a 314 at Sagamore this week. Alex Marry, who withdrew from competition on Wednesday due to illness, came back and led the team on Friday, recording a 76, matching Wendelken's score on Friday.

With a team score of 1216, Sonoma State was 10 strokes off the championship pace held by Florida Southern, who captured its 12th national title in program history. Central Missouri finished in second place with a score of 1213. CCAA-rival Chico State came in at third place, just two strokes ahead of Sonoma State at 1214 and Barry University rounded out the top five (1218). Other CCAA teams -- Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State Stanislaus -- finished 11th and 13th, respectively.

Cyril Bouniol of Abilene Christian grabbed individual medalist honors after shooting a three-under 285 in the 72-hole event.

Sonoma State, who won the 2010 NCAA Division West/Central Regional Championship two weeks ago, wrapped up their fourth consecutive appearance at the national tournament, marking their second best national finish ever.
