WALNUT CREEK, Calif- After scoring four goals in two games last weekend, Sonoma State forward
Taylor Varnadore has been named the Wilson/California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men's Soccer Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 6-12, it was announced on Tuesday.
Varnadore, a freshman and local product from Sebastopol and Analy HS, totaled eight points (four goals) while helping the Seawolves to a CCAA-opening split against Cal Poly Pomona and No. 10 Cal State San Bernardino. The 17-year old true freshman scored a pair of goals in a 5-3 loss to the Broncos on Friday and followed up that performance with two scores in a 3-1 victory over the Coyotes.
"We knew that Taylor was going to be an excellent player for us, but we weren't sure when," head coach
Marcus Ziemer said. "He hit the ground running and is obviously off to a great start to his career. He is a perfect fit for the striker position for us and is only going to get better."
The 6-3 forward becomes the first Sonoma State men's soccer player to earn the weekly award since former student-athlete Eric Lafon did so for the week of Oct. 27-Nov. 2, 2008. Four Seawolves were named the conference's player of the week that season. The last freshman to win the award was former student-athlete Nathan Medina in 2005.
Sonoma State (3-1-0, 1-1-0 CCAA) will host Cal State East Bay (1-4-0, 0-2-0 CCAA) on Friday at the Seawolf Soccer Field, kicking off at 4 p.m.
