SANTA ROSA, Calif- Recently the Sonoma State men's soccer team took time away from their busy schedules to visit with students at Kawana Elementary School in Santa Rosa. This volunteer opportunity proved to be valuable for the children as well as the student-athletes from SSU.
Members of the men's soccer team sat down with students and told them about their individual journeys to Sonoma State University. They answered questions and, in the end, made a connection with their school-aged audience.
"It was an exciting opportunity for our student athletes to give back to their community," said Sonoma State assistant
Shawn Percell. "The players really enjoyed spending the afternoon with the elementary school students and we are looking forward to working with them again."
Following the discussion, the soccer team set up a field, equipped with goals, balls, and warmup jerseys for an impromptu pickup game.
Student-athletes involved with the visit included
Taylor Varnadore, Brian Clemntino,
Ben Hubbard,
Kasey Addiego,
Jomed Tejan,
Brian Angel, and
Victor Sosa.
The Sonoma State men's soccer team opens up their 2011 season this August. They will be shooting for their fifth straight trip to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
