Heller Tied For Third At Regional With One Round To Play

Junior Spencer Heller is trying to make it back to the national tournament for the third straight year.

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz.
-- After firing a three-under-par 69 in the opening round on Monday, Spencer Heller came back to shoot a three-over-par 75 in Tuesday's second round, placing her tied for third on the individual leaderboard, just four strokes back of the leader (Taylor Neidy of Central Oklahoma) with 18 holes to play at the 2012 NCAA Division II Women's Golf West Super Regional Tournament, taking place at The Wigwam in Litchfield Park, Ariz.  As a team, Sonoma State remains in eighth place, trailing the leader (Tarleton State) by 29 shots.

Heller (69-75--144) is at even par after 36 holes of competition, tied at third place with Haley Haught (70-74) of St. Edward's and Katy Ward (72-72) of Tarleton State.  Cal State Monterey Bay's Courtney Soekland (74-69--143) rose nine spots from 11th place after Monday's round to second place with a score of 69, putting her at one-under-par for the tournament.  Neidy (72-68--140) rose from fifth place to the top of the leaderboard.

Meanwhile, Samantha Balanon remained in a tie for 20th after carding identical scores of 76 (152; +8) in the first two rounds, followed by Chelsa Helget-Robinson (78-82--160; +16), who is tied for 42nd.  Zoei Zbaraschuk (85-79--164; +20) is in 45th place and McKayla Kennedy (84-82--166; +22) is posted at 46th place.

Tarleton State remains in the lead on the team leaderboard at 590 (+14), eight strokes in front of Cal State Monterey Bay (598; +22).  Grand Canyon and Central Oklahoma (599; +23) are one shot back of CSUMB and tied for third place, followed by fifth-place St. Edward's (601; +25), sixth-place Midwestern State (606; +30) and seventh-place West Texas A&M (611; +35).  Sonoma State (619; +43) is in eighth place and Northeastern State (624; +48) is in last place.

The first tee time of the third and final round is scheduled for 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.  McKayla Kennedy (7:50), Zoei Zbaraschuk (8:00), Chelsa Helget-Robinson (8:10), Samantha Balanon (8:20) and Spencer Heller (8:30) will follow soon thereafter.

After Tuesday's final round, the top three teams and top three individuals not with a team will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will be held on May 16-19 at Persimmon Ridge Golf Course in Kentucky.
