Seawolves Stunned By No. 24 Toros

Cal State Dominguez Hills Ends SSU's Eight-Game Winning Streak

CARSON, Calif-  Cal State Dominguez Hills got a little revenge on Sunday afternoon, ending Sonoma State's eight-game winning streak and tagging the Seawolves with their first CCAA loss, a 5-0 drubbing at Toro Stadium in Carson.  The Seawolves drop to 9-4-0, 8-1-0 CCAA while the Toros improve to 8-5-0, 4-5-0 CCAA.

Despite the loss, the Seawolves still have a two-game lead on the entire CCAA.  Chico State is in second place in the CCAA North at 6-3-0 and Cal State L.A. leads the South with that same record.

Though they had been struggling of late, the Toros looked every bit the defending regional champion as they nearly answered a similar rout at the hands of the Seawolves last year.  It was a year ago that SSU whipped the Toros 6-0 at Seawolf Field before beating CSUDH in double overtime to capture the CCAA title.

Said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer, "We were just beat up and out of gas after a tough game at UC San Diego (on Friday)."  The Seawolves came back to defeat UCSD 2-1 in front of a packed house in La Jolla to run their winning streak to eight.

On Sunday, the Toros dominated, peppering SSU goalkeeper Brook Johnson with 12 shots in the first half alone.  Jesse Graham finally broke through in the 27th minute when he stayed with a blocked shot attempt and dribbled around a fallen Johnson for the opening goal.  Graham would also take part in the Toros' second goal on an assist to Scott Mariano in the 33rd minute.

The score would stay at 2-0 until late in the game when CSUDH found the back of the net three times in the game's final seven minutes.  Julio Madrigal, Scott Mariano, and then Madrigal again, all scored to put the game well out of reach.

CSUDH had a 23-8 advantage in shots and took seven corners to SSU's six.  The Toros also led in fouls, committing 26 to the 14 called on Sonoma State.

Sonoma State will try to get back on track on Wednesday when they host Humboldt State.
