CARSON, Calif- Cal State Dominguez Hills' Candace Hearn lofted a shot past the outstretched arms of SSU goalkeeper Carissa Amiral to give the Toros a 2-1 overtime win over Sonoma State on Sunday afternoon in Carson. The loss was the second straight for the Seawolves, who fall to 8-5-0, 6-3-0 CCAA. The Toros improve to 6-6-1, 5-3-1 CCAA.
The Toros got on the board first when Rachele McDonald took a feed from Sandy Lloyd and crossed it to the feet of Jackie Chavez. Chavez beat Amiral to the near post and CSUDH had a 1-0 lead just 13:44 into the game.
Sonoma State got the equalizer in the 50th minute when
Tracy Webster took a through ball and beat CSUDH goalkeeper Ashley De Alejandro to the far post. It was the team-high sixth goal of the year for Webster, a freshman from Sebsatopol. Khyra Buchanan and
Brittany Peterson were credited with assists on the play.
Both sides had opportunities late in the game, but shots were either blocked by great saves or found crossbars instead of net.
Just one minute away from the end of the first overtime period, Hearn lofted a shot from the 18-yard corner towards the far post that somehow found its way over Amiral's outstretched arms.
CSUDH had a commanding 31-9 shot advantage, including 8-0 in overtime. SSU's sophomore goalkeeper Carissa Amiral had a busy day, making 15 saves.
At 6-3-0 in conference play, the Seawolves are still in well in the thick of the CCAA race. SSU is currently four points behind Chico State (7-1-1) in the North and they have the third-highest point total (18) in the CCAA. The top four teams will compete in the CCAA tournament at the end of October.
The Seawolves will try to snap their two-game skid on Wednesday when they host Humboldt State in a key North Division battle.
