Seawolves Edge Coyotes In Defensive Battle

Emily Thompson netted the game-winner in the 78th minute

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Emily Thompson scored late and the Sonoma State defense stood strong as the Seawolves defeated Cal State San Bernardino 1-0 in CCAA women's soccer action Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park.  With the win, Sonoma State inches closer to a postseason berth as they improve to 10-5-2, 8-3-2.  The Coyotes fall to 1-14-1, 0-12-1 CCAA.

"I felt our defense played very well today," said SSU head coach Luke Oberkirch.  "We just hung in there and then got a scrappy goal.  It's that time of the year when every game is big, so it's huge to get a win here."

Despite outshooting the Coyotes 9-1 in the first half, the Seawolves couldn't push one past CSUSB goalie Laura Lyons in the first half.  In the 78th minute, SSU finally broke through.  Brittany Peterson played a ball in to Emily Thompson, who blasted it toward Lyons who blocked the ball, but then carried it into the goal after retrieving the rebound.  It was the fourth goal of the year for Thompson, a senior from Anchorage, Alaska.

SSU's goalkeeper, Carissa Amiral, was solid again, posting her sixth shutout of the season with one save.  She lowered her goals against average to a superb 0.69.

Sonoma State limited the Coyotes to just three shots in the game.  SSU, on the other hand, had 15 shots, seven of which were on goal.  Lyons made six saves in the game.

The Seawolves will close out their home schedule on Sunday when they host Cal Poly Pomona.  Prior to the game there will be a short ceremony honoring SSU's seniors.
