Wiedeman Nets Game Winner Against Broncos

Mark Wiedeman sending the Seawolves off with a win in overtime

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Mark Wiedeman got the game-winner just three minutes into overtime as Sonoma State edged Cal Poly Pomona by a 1-0 score on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park.  The win lifts the Seawolves to 13-5-0, 12-2-0 CCAA.  The Broncos drop to 8-6-3, 6-5-3 CCAA.

After two scorless halves, the Seawolves pushed across the game-winner when Mike Travis crossed the ball from the left to a charging Mark Wiedeman.  The sophomore one-timed it past a diving goalkeeper for his first goal of the season.

Sonoma State, the CCAA North Division champion, is now 3-0 in overtime games this season.

Clark Rupp played well before he was removed due to an injury in the 86th minute.  The senior didn't allow a goal and made three saves.  Brook Johnson came on in relief and preserved the shutout.

Prior to the game, Sonoma State's four seniors, Brett Cook, Clark Rupp, Jaime Rivera, and Mason Hill-Harrill, were honored.

Sonoma State had a 14-10 advantage in shots and a commanding 8-1 lead in corner kicks.  The foul count was fairly even (18-16 in SSU's advantage) and each team received two yellow cards.

The Seawolves close out the regular season next weekend when they travel to Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State.  They will compete in the CCAA Tournament, October 27th-29th, at a site yet to be determined.
