POMONA, Calif- For the third straight game, the Sonoma State women's basketball team squandered a big first half lead before falling in half number two. On Friday night it was Cal Poly Pomona emerging with a 63-57 win over the Seawolves at Kellogg Gym in Pomona. The loss sends the Seawolves to 0-3, 0-1 CCAA. The Broncos improve to 2-1, 1-0 CCAA.
As was the case in the Coslet Classic, the Seawolves got out to a great start thanks to an impressive defensive effort. SSU held the Broncos to just 19 first half points on 33% shooting and entered the break up 32-19.
Cal Poly Pomona turned their fortunes around with 67% shooting in the second half, outscoring Sonoma State 44-25 in the process. After shooting 56% in the first half, SSU connected on just eight of 31 shots for a 26% clip in the second.
Junior
Danae Wellander continued her excellent play on offense and defense, taking team-high honors with 20 points and 11 rebounds. It was her second double-double of the young season.
Lauren Redfield had seven assists and
Nichola Hester pitched in with eight points and four rebounds.
Vanessa Dominguez paced the Broncos with 15 points and 15 rebounds. Ashley Moody came off the bench to pour in 16 points.
In their first three games of the season, SSU has outscored their opponents 78-51 in the first half. In the second half, they are being outscored 120-82.
The Seawolves will try to pick up their first win of the season tomorrow night at Cal State San Bernardino.
