ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sophomores Katie Houle and
Brooke Peterson made sure the Sonoma State women's soccer team enjoyed their home opener on Friday afternoon. Houle scored three goals and Peterson had three assists as the Seawolves rolled to a 5-1 win over Western Washington. The win lifts SSU's record to 2-1-0.
SSU Head Coach Luke Oberkirch was happy with his team's effort, stating "I'm really proud of the team. It's huge to be able to bounce back after a tough game (a 4-0 loss at Seattle). We really dominated today."
Freshman
Lindsay Catton got the Seawolves on the board in the 15th minute when she bent a corner kick into the upper left corner of the net. The celebration wouldn't last long, however, as WWU (2-1-0) answered back just one minute later when Rosie Zadra found Kelly Gagne for a left-footer from 20 yards out.
Sonoma State went up 2-1 in the 23rd minute when Katie Houle scored the first of her three goals off a cross from Peterson. She lit up the scoreboard again just 11 minutes later when Peterson's free kick landed right at her feet for another easy tap in.
Just sixteen seconds into the second half, the Seawolves made it a three-goal game. Brooke Peterson found freshman
Tracy Webster, who broke away and struck before the Vikings knew what had hit them. A final goal was scored by Houle in the 66th minute as she lifted a ball from 25 yards out up and over the Viking goalie.
All five of SSU's goals were the work of underclassmen.
Houle's hat trick was the first by a Seawolf since Khyra Buchanan accomplished the feat last year. Ironically Peterson's three assist game was the first since Amanda Harris did it in 2005, in the same game Buchanan had a hat trick.
In Friday's other action, Cal State L.A. shocked No. 2 Seattle Pacific 2-0. The loss ended a 60-game regular season unbeaten streak for the Falcons, last year's NCAA Division II runner-up.
Sonoma State will host No. 2 Seattle Pacific on Monday afternoon.
