SEASIDE, Calif- Sonoma State scored early, and often, in a 7-1 drubbing of Cal State Monterey Bay on Sunday afternoon in Seaside. Lindsay Catton scored just 20 seconds into the game to set the tone as the Seawolves improve to 6-3-0, 4-1-0 CCAA. It was the fastest goal to start a game in the history of SSU women's soccer. The Otters remain winless at 0-8-0, 0-5-0 CCAA.
With the win, the Seawolves stay just three points behind first place Chico State (5-0-0) in the CCAA North Division.
Catton's goal broke the record of Cathleen Celaya who scored 47 seconds into a game against Cal State San Bernardino on October 6, 2002.
Up 1-0 just 20 seconds in, the Seawolves kept up the pressure and found net again just three minutes later when Catton and Khyra Buchanan assisted on an Emily Thompson goal. The score would remain 2-0 for 30 minutes until Katie Houle ended the half with her team-high fifth goal of the game.
Sonoma State really poured it on in the second half as five goals were scored, the first by Brooke Peterson off a Tracy Webster assist in the 51st minute. Kayce Brawley was next in line with an unassisted strike in the 68th minute.
At 73:21, Kari Houle connected on her first goal of the year on a penalty kick. Exactly one minute later, she scored again, this time off a Tiffany Chappell cross.
The Otters ruined the shutout with a goal in the 88th minute by Marina Baham.
