ROHNERT PARK, Calif- The Sonoma State men's soccer team finally put a notch in the win column with a decisive 3-1 victory over Western Washington on Saturday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The win was a result of a great defensive effort as the Seawolves (1-2-0) limited the Vikings (0-4-0) to just four shots in the game.
Said SSU Head Coach Marcus Ziemer, "It feels good to get the monkey off our back and score some goals." Looking forward to Monday's matchup with No. 9 Seattle Pacific, Ziemer remarked, "We'll have our work cut out for us... SPU is very good. It should be a great game."
Scoreless in their first two games of the season, the Seawolves wasted little time getting on the board as Steven Browne found the net off a nice centering pass from Doug Carr in the 11th minute. The Vikings were quick to answer, though, as Gus Zadra lifted a ball over a drawn out Seawolf goalkeeper for the equalizing strike.
Sonoma State put the game away in the middle of the first half when they scored a pair of goals in a five minute stretch. First, Brett Cook blasted a free kick from 20 yards out into the net for what would become the game-winner. Nathan Medina struck next when he bounced a ball in to the upper left corner from 15 yards out. Mike Duncan was credited with an assist on Medina's goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Brook Johnson picked up the win with a solid effort in his first collegiate game action.
Sonoma State outshot the Vikings 13-4 and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. They also 'led' in fouls, committing 31 to just 18 for Western Washington. The game was quite physical as six yellow cards were accrued, five by WWU and one by SSU.
The Seawolves will face No. 9 Seattle Pacific on Monday afternoon in the finale of the 2006 Seawolf Classic Tournament.
