Oates Scores Two, But Seawolves Fall To No. 2 SPU

ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Senior Courtney Oates scored two goals, but it would not be enough as the Sonoma State women's soccer team lost to No. 2 Seattle Pacific 3-2 on Monday in Rohnert Park.  The Seawolves (2-2-0) put up a fine effort and hung with last year's national runner-up the entire way.  The Falcons, who had their 60-game regular season unbeaten streak snapped on Friday, improve to 4-1-0 on the year.

It looked like an upset might be in the cards when SSU scored a goal just 2:02 into the game.  Megan Catton sent a diagonal cross down low to Oates who one-timed it past Falcon goalkeeper Katie Ruggles.

SPU tied it up in th 31st minute when Kara Hamby converted a penalty kick.  They went ahead in the 38th when Tricia Loomis scored an unassisted goal less than a minute after she checked into the game.

Sonoma State tied it up in the 63rd minute when Oates scored her second goal of the game.  This time it was a free kick by Lindsay Catton that was headed on to Oates by Khyra Buchanan.  Both Catton and Buchanan were awarded with assists on the play.

The game-winner came in the 68th minute when Tricia Loomis picked up her second goal of the game off a 30-yard free kick.

Seattle Pacific held a slight advantage in shots, 10-8.  Sonoma led in corner kicks (6-2) and fouls (12-8).

Sonoma State is back in action next Friday when they host Cal State Bakersfield.
