ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State picked up their seventh straight win on Thursday night with a 76-67 win over rival Chico State on Thursday evening in Rohnert Park. J.T. Tipton led the way with 21 points and Patrick Mitchell had 13 points and seven assists as the Seawolves improve to 8-7, 7-4 CCAA. The Wildcats drop to 6-10, 4-7 CCAA.
SSU's seven-game winning streak is tied for the third longest in school history. The school record, a 13-gamer, was set in 1973-74. Thursday night's result also marked the sixth straight win for SSU against Chico State and the 11th in the last 12 games.
Sonoma State rolled to a 17-9 lead in the first seven minutes of the game and didn't look back, pushing their lead to 15 at the break, 39-24. SSU's lead got as large as 19 in the second half at 53-34 with 13:18 remaining.
Chico put in a charge to bring the game to within seven thanks to a 12-0 run over a six and a half minute stretch, but SSU hit their free throws at the end to ice it.
As a team, Sonoma State connected on 26 of their 33 free throw attempts. J.T. Tipton got nine of his 21 points at the free throw line. Kevin Cornwell led SSU with five assists and Patrick Mitchell was tops with three steals and seven assists.
Andy Bocian led Chico State with 20 points, all of them coming in the second half. He also had five rebounds, tying Stockhammer for team-high honors.
The Seawolves will look for their eighth consecutive win on Saturday night when they host Cal State Stanislaus.
