ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Cal State Stanislaus' Dominique Pennix hit a layup with five seconds remaining to hand Sonoma State a heartbreaking 87-85 double overtime loss on Saturday night in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves led by three with 20 seconds to go, but saw their lead slip away, snapping their seven-game winning streak. SSU falls to 8-8, 7-5 CCAA. The Warriors improve to 10-9, 6-6 CCAA.
Cal State Stanislaus used an 8-0 run midway through the first half to go up by nine at 28-19. SSU would quickly claw back into it and the nine point advantage would be the largest of the game for either team.
Trailing by two points,
Patrick Mitchell hit a layup with 16 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 64. After Stanislaus' Anthony Zuniga turned the ball over with just eight seconds left, the Seawolves were set up with a chance to win it. However,
Kevin Cornwell's three-pointer rimmed out and the game headed for overtime.
In the first overtime,
Andrew Kochevar gave SSU a three-point lead with 18 seconds left after he was fouled while converting a layup. The ensuing free throw made it 76-73, but the Warriors' Marcus Martinez nailed a trey with just six ticks left to knot it at 76 and send things to a second OT.
A back-and-forth second overtime followed before
J.T. Tipton hit a free throw to give Sonoma State an 85-82 lead. After a Warrior miss, the Seawolves had three chances to put the game away, but each shot was no good and the ball was returned to Stanislaus with 37 seconds left.
SSU's
Kevin Cornwell committed his fifth and final foul of the game with 27 seconds left, sending local product Scott Behrs to the line for three with his team down 85-82. Despite missing all three free throws, the Warriors got the rebound and with 20 seconds left in the game, another Sonoma County native, Nic Pederson, drilled a three to tie it at 85. It was Pederson's only field goal attempt of the night.
Patrick Mitchell almost gave the Seawolves another lead with 12 seconds left, but his layup rimmed out and just seven seconds later, Dominique Pennix hit a layup of his own to put Stanislaus up 87-85. Neither team had a timeout left, so SSU rushed the length of the floor, getting a decent look at a shot to tie it, but
Barry Weiss' runner bounced out and the Seawolves were handed a bitter loss.
SSU's real downfall came in poor free throw shooting. The Seawolves shot just 22-of-36 from the line for the night.
J.T. Tipton led Sonoma State with 26 points, of which 16 came from the charity stripe (in 25 attempts).
Kevin Cornwell turned in 17 points and nine boards.
Pennix led Stanislaus with 24 points on 10-of-17 shooting, including four three-pointers. Cameron Quick posted a 13-point, 17-rebound double-double.
The loss was the first of 2007 for the Seawolves, as they saw their seven-game winning streak snapped. Prior to Saturday, SSU's last loss was on December 30th to Humboldt State.
SSU will try to pick up the pieces next weekend, but it won't be easy as the region's top two teams are coming to town. Cal State San Bernardino (No. 1) is here Thursday night and Cal Poly Pomona (No. 2) visits on Saturday.
