ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State suffered a 21-3 loss in their women's water polo season opener against No. 12 Hartwick College on Saturday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves got goals from Jenna Bole, Sam Mullins, and Tasha Thiele as they fall to 0-1 on the season. The Hartwick Hawks improve to 1-1.
Hartwick got out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, extending the lead to 12-0 midway through the second period before SSU got on the board. At the break it was 14-2 Hartwick and a 7-1 advantage in the second half pushed the final tally to 21-3.
The Hawks, ranked No. 1 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) pre-season poll, finished sixth in the nation last year. On Saturday they were led by three goals from Christina Evans and Kirsten Hudson. Erica Leima, Stefani Toungate, and Kimberley Sumich each had two goals apiece.
Sonoma State will try for their first win of the season tomorrow when they face UC Davis and Cal State East Bay in Davis, California.
