Seawolves Beat Otters For 13th Straight Victory

Andrew Bailey had two goals and an assist on Friday afternoon
PETALUMA, Calif-  Andrew Bailey scored two goals and assisted on another in Sonoma State's 4-2 win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Friday afternoon at Lucchesi Park in Petaluma.  The win extends SSU's school-record winning streak to 13 games in a row.  The Seawolves, ranked 15th in the nation, are now 14-2-1, 12-0-0 CCAA.  The Otters drop to 7-7-2, 4-5-2 CCAA.

"This was a good win for us," said SSU head coach Marcus Ziemer.  "I thought we played well at times, but we were up and down a lot too.  We wanted the shutout, but gave away a couple goals."

The highest-scoring team in the CCAA, the Seawolves have scored at least two goals in all 13 games of their winning streak.

On the fast field turf of Lucchesi Park, the Seawolves were able to showcase their speed and ball control.  However, despite several excellent scoring opportunities, the Seawolves were held out of the goal for the first 27 minutes.

Andrew Bailey broke through for Sonoma State when he netted his first goal of the game, off a Nathan Medina assist, in the 28th minute.

The score would remain 1-0 through the end of the first half and for the first seven minutes of the second.  That's when Ross Middlemiss made it 2-0 when he took a feed from Bailey and beat the CSUMB goalkeeper from straight away for his fifth goal of the season.

Less than five minutes later it was 3-0 as Bailey scored his 13th goal of the season off a double assist from Ross Middlemiss and Eric Lafon

Said Ziemer, "It was nice to get Bailey back on track."  The CCAA's scoring leader, Bailey has scored 13 goals in each of his seasons at SSU and he's just four goals away from breaking Andrew Ziemer's all-time scoring record of 42.

CSUMB drew to within two with a Kyle Satow goal in the 61st minute, but SSU was able to push the lead back to three at 4-1 when David Seidel connected for his fourth goal of the season off a double assist from Eric Larson and Mark Wiedeman

Andrew Burkhammer scored the game's final goal in the 86th minute when he gathered a loose ball and sent a laser from deep on the right side.

SSU out shot the Otters 21-12.  The foul count (13-10 SSU) and corner kick totals (7-6) were close.

Brook Johnson played the first 82:40 at goalkeeper for SSU before yielding to freshman Taylor Jones.

At 12-0-0, the Seawolves are off to their best conference start ever.  They are also now 26-2-1 in their last 29 conference games dating back to 2005.

The last CCAA team to go undefeated in conference play was Cal State Dominguez Hills (12-0-2) in 2004.  The Toros are also the last team to have a perfect record in CCAA play, 14-0-0 in 2000.

The Seawolves will try to keep the streak alive on Sunday in their final CCAA home game of the year, against San Francisco State.  SSU's six seniors will be honored in a short ceremony before the game.
