ARCATA, Calif-
Andrew Bailey scored his 42nd career goal to tie Andrew Ziemer for the top spot on Sonoma State's all-time scoring list on Sunday in a 5-0 win over Humboldt State. It was the second consecutive 5-0 win for SSU as they close out CCAA play with a perfect 14-0-0 season. The Seawolves are 17-2-1 overall and will enter the playoffs on a 16-game winning streak.
The Seawolves have outscored their last five opponents by a score of 21-3. SSU has scored at least three goals in all of those matches and has recorded 5-0 wins in their last two outings, including Friday against Notre Dame de Namur.
Bailey is the conference's leader with 16 goals this season. He had 13 as a freshman and as a sophomore. Andrew Ziemer scored 42 goals for the Seawolves in 1990 and 1991.
Sonoma State rolled on Sunday thanks to four first half goals. "We came out ready to play today," said SSU head coach
Marcus Ziemer, "We jumped on them early and played well throughout."
Steven Browne scored the game's first goal on a double assist from
Nathan Medina and
Andrew Bailey in the 12th minute. The lead was pushed to 2-0 just seven minutes later when Medina scored a goal of his own off assists by
Eric Larson and
Michael Asaro.
Marke Wiedeman made it a 3-0 lead off of
Mike Travis and
Ross Middlemiss assists in the 32nd minute.
Andrew Bailey's record-tying goal came just before the half when he scored off a
Casey Dayton feed.
The final margin of 5-0 was set in the the 51st minute on an 'own goal' by Humboldt State.
Perhaps lost in all the scoring was a fine effort by SSU's defense. Seawolf goalkeeper
Brook Johnson needed to make just one save in the game, on his way to his eighth shutout of the year.
However, as pleased as Ziemer has been with this team's effort, he knows there is much more to do. "I'm happy with where we are, but now the real season starts. We haven't accomplished a thing yet."
The last CCAA team to go 14-0-0 in conference play was Cal State Dominguez Hills in 2000.
In addition to the winning streak, the Seawolves kept alive a streak of 16 straight games scoring at least two goals. SSU is now 28-2-1 in their last 31 conference games dating back to 2005.
The Seawolves have scored 55 goals this season on 66 assists. They are the only team in the conference with more assists than goals, a testament to their strong team work and ball handling skills.
The Seawolves will compete in the CCAA Tournament next weekend in Carson. SSU is the No. 1 seed in the tournament and will not know until all results are in on Sunday who they will play in the first round.
