Seawolves Power Past Mesa State, 81-69

Genny Anderson had 23 points in Saturday's win over Mesa St.
CHICO, Calif-  Sonoma State got 22 points from Genny Anderson to defeat Mesa State 81-69 on Saturday evening at the Coslet Classic in Chico.  The Seawolves finish their opening weekend with a perfect 2-0 record.

One night removed from a win over the fourth-ranked team in the country, West Texas A&M, the Seawolves quickly put to bed the notion that they were a one-night wonder.  SSU stormed to an early 15-2 lead before settling on an 11-point halftime lead, 35-24.

Mesa State would slowly chip away at the Seawolf lead in the second half, eventually catching and passing SSU with under ten minutes to go.  Mesa led by three points with 6:44 to go before SSU dug deep and powered past the Mavericks for the 81-69 win.

Again the Seawolves relied heavily on their starting lineup for their offense.  74 of SSU's 81 points came from the starting five.  For the weekend, 127 of their 137 points have come from the starting lineup.

Joining Anderson in double digits were  Lauren Redfield (18), Danae Wellander (17), and Chelsey Armacost (16).  Redfield came up big down the stretch with four three-pointers and five rebounds. Wellander, one night removed from a 21-point performance, dished out seven assists.

Both Anderson and Wellander were named to the All-Tournament team.

Despite giving up 69 points, the Seawolf defense was still very disruptive, forcing 19 turnovers and allowing the Mavericks just three assists in the game.

SSU will open up conference play in two weeks when they head south to take on Cal State Dominguez Hills and Cal State L.A.
