ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State got 19 points and 12 rebounds from senior
Danae Wellander to cruise to a 68-50 win over Dominican University on Wednesday evening in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves held a commanding lead on the boards and limited the Penguins to just 27% shooting as they improve to 6-1 on the season. Dominican falls to 2-13.
After the Seawolves jetted to a 12-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game, the Penguins were able to keep within reach, entering the break down twelve at 35-23.
Leading by 11 with 14:33 left in the game, Sonoma State used a 10-1 lead to move the margin to 20. It would get as big as 25 on a couple of occasions before the Penguins chipped it down to 18 in the final moments.
Wellander overwhelmed the Penguins on both sides of the ball, turning in her first double-double of the season. She was 7-of-12 from the field and had three assists in addition to her 19 points and 12 boards.
Michelle Gardner had a career-high of ten rebounds off the bench to lead a solid effort by the Seawolf reserves. Olivia Larkin went for a career-high nine points and a team-leading four rebounds and
Christy Shreve had seven points, five rebounds and three blocks.
Genny Anderson had nine rebounds and nine points, just missing out on the double-double.
SSU had a 56-39 lead on the boards and out shot Dominican 42% - 27%.
The Penguins were led by Olivia Williams (18 points) and Alisha Flaaten (17 points). The duo combined for 70% of the team's points. Simone Shellmire was a star on the boards with 11 rebounds, but she was held scoreless.
The Seawolves will return to action on December 28th when they host the Hampton Inn & Suites Classic. Chico State, St. Cloud State, and Montana State-Billings will join the Seawolves for two days of top-flight women's basketball at Seawolf Gym.
