Seawolves Roar Past Silverswords, 69-58

Steve Cornett had 16 rebounds in an impressive effort on Friday night
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Sonoma State overcame a slow start to roar past Chaminade, 69-58 on Friday in the Seventh Annual Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic.  The Seawolves got 17 points from Andrew Kochevar and 16 rebounds from Steve Cornett as they improve to 4-1 on the season.  The Silverswords drop to 2-3.

While neither team got off to a flying start, the Seawolves were particularly inept, scoring just two points in the first nine minutes of play.  From there, however, the Seawolves went on an 18-0 run to take a twelve-point lead.  SSU's lead was seven at the break, 26-19.

The teams traded buckets in the first few minutes of the second half before a Hayden Heiber layup pulled Chaminade to within three at 34-31 with just under 15 minutes left.  SSU's Gerred Link was quick to answer, nailing a three a few seconds later and the lead was never less than two possessions the rest of the way.

Andrew Kochevar and Ben Washington were stellar in the second half.  Kochevar finished the game with four three-pointers and Washington had all 14 of his points in the second frame.   Cornett owned the boards, grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds despite not starting the game.

Rodrick Johnson led the Silverswords with 17 points, despite a 7-for-25 shooting performance.  Marko Kolaric, Chaminade's 7-footer from Serbia, finished with a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double.

The Seawolves will take on Notre Dame de Namur in tomorrow's Logsdon Classic finale.
