SEASIDE, Calif-
J.T. Tipton scored 25 points to lead Sonoma State to a 77-74 overtime win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night in Seaside. Tipton's effort pushed him past the 1,500 point barrier and puts him within just 14 points of SSU's all-time scoring record. The Seawolves are now 11-11, 10-8 CCAA.
Tipton has now scored 1,505 points in his career. SSU's all-time leader, Creedence Perkins, scored 1,518 points from 1987-91.
Sonoma State was fortunate to keep things close in the first half after a tough shooting stretch that saw them hit just 28% of their shots before the break. Down just five at 26-21, SSU turned it on in the second half, connecting on 60% from the field.
The second half saw SSU storm back to take the lead, but they were unable to pull away by more than a half dozen points. Leading 62-61 with 56 seconds to go, SSU's
Ben Washington was sent to the line for two free throws. The freshman made just one, which allowed the Otters' Richard Jenkins to tie it up at 63 with 42 seconds left. Both teams missed shots to win it in the final 15 seconds, sending the game to overtime.
CSUMB made the first bucket in OT, but SSU got the lead right back with an
Andrew Kochevar free throw and a Tipton layup. Though SSU wouldn't trail the rest of the way, the Otters had a chance to tie, but Augie Johnston's last second three-pointer rimmed out.
Tipton was 12-of-24 from the field and had a team-high seven rebounds. Kochevar pitched in with 13 points and
Barry Weiss, in his second straight start, had nine points and six boards.
D'Shon Cannon led the Otters with 19 points.
SSU hosts Cal State L.A. and Cal State Bakersfield next Thursday and Saturday at Seawolf Gym.
