Baseball Earns Split With 'Lopes

Chase McGuire's sixth inning homer led SSU to a game two win
PHOENIX, Ariz-  Sonoma State split a non-conference baseball doubleheader with Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon in Phoenix.  GCU came back to win the opener 9-1 before SSU emerged with a 4-0 win in the nightcap.  The split leaves the Seawolves at 5-2 overall heading into tomorrow's series finale.

Grand Canyon rallied from a 7-1 seventh-inning deficit in game one with a three run seventh and a five run eighth.  Matt Henne delivered the crucial blow with a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the eighth that gave GCU the lead.

Robert Walden went 3-for-5 and Tyrese McDaniel was 2-for-5 for SSU.  GCU's Josiah Ziegler pitched the final 1 1/3 innings to get the win while Paige Dumont was tagged with the loss for Sonoma State.

In game two, Chase McGuire supplied all the offense Sonoma State would need with a two-run sixth inning home run, his third of the year.  McDaniel tacked on a couple of insurance runs with a two-run single in the seventh.  Matt Bush started and pitched 5.1 shutout innings to get the win.  Dumont got the save with a solid 1.2 inning outing.

The teams will play a single game on Sunday afternoon.
