ROHNERT PARK, Calif- For the second time in three nights, the Sonoma State women's basketball team used an impenetrable defense to cruise to a win. On Saturday night it was the Seawolves beating Cal Poly Pomona 49-33. The win lifts the Seawolves to 9-9 overall and 8-6 in conference play. The Broncos drop to 5-13, 4-9 CCAA.
The 33 points allowed by Sonoma State was the lowest since November 30th, 2001. That night, SSU beat Pacific Union 90-16.
Combined with their performance against CSU San Bernardino on Thursday, allowing just 40 points, the Seawolves yielded just 73 points in 80 minutes of action this weekend.
Sonoma State struggled nearly as much on offense as the Broncos did in the first half, taking only an 18-16 lead into the break. After a few minutes of back and forth action, the Seawolves went on a 6-0 run to take a 29-23 lead with 13 minutes left. Over the final 15 minutes of action, SSU held the Broncos to just ten points.
CPP shot just 26.1% for the game and committed 25 turnovers. The Seawolves improved their 29% first half shooting to nearly 33% for the game after a solid second half.
Chelsey Armacost led all scorers with 15 points. Danae Wellander had a solid all-around game with 11 points, seven rebounds, and five assists and Nichola Hester grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Cal Poly Pomona had just one player in double figures, Ally Smith with 11. Porsche Kirksey had nine rebounds and Rachel Gatdula dished out six assists.
