Seawolves Outdone By Hot Shooting UCSD Squad

J.T. Tipton carried SSU with 24 points and 11 rebounds on Friday
LA JOLLA, Calif-  UC San Diego shot an unheard of 70.5% for the game to beat Sonoma State 90-76 in CCAA men's basketball action on Friday night in La Jolla.  The Tritons shot 75% in the second half to overcome an early SSU lead and snap a 13-game losing streak to the Seawolves.  UCSD goes to 10-10, 8-7 CCAA while Sonoma State drops to 9-10, 8-7 CCAA.

It was the first win for UC San Diego over Sonoma State since the Tritons joined the CCAA prior to the 2000-01 season.

Sonoma State led by as many as nine points in the first half before the Tritons began sinking everything they threw up.  After a 65% first half shooting performance, UCSD hit 18-of-24 shots in the second half to set a record for best field goal percentage by an SSU opponent.  The Tritons shot better from the field and from three-point territory (71%) than they did from the free throw line (64%).

Five Tritons scored in double figures, led by 15 from Kelvin Kim.  Kim also had eight assists.

Sonoma State got a 24-point, 11-rebound double-double from J.T. Tipton and a career-high 20 points from Patrick Mitchell, but it wouldn't be enough to stop the Tritons.  SSU shot 56.5% for the night, well above their season average.

Sonoma State will try to bounce back against Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday in Carson.
