CARSON, Calif- The Sonoma State baseball team split a doubleheader with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday afternoon at Toro Field in Carson. The Seawolves fell in game one 4-2 before bouncing back with a 6-1 win in the nightcap. The split leaves the Seawolves at 14-5, 9-2 CCAA. The Toros are now 8-12-1, 4-7 CCAA.
SSU got a solid pitching performance from Brent Lysander in the opener, but a couple of early runs spelled doom. After Chase McGuire put SSU up with an RBI single in the first, the Toros bounced right back when Chris Hunter and Mateo Marquez drove in runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 2-1. CSUDH would tack on a run in the fourth and another in the sixth to make it 4-1. The Seawolves cut the lead to two in the seventh when B.J. Collom scored on an error by the Toro left fielder, but that's as close as SSU would get.
In game two, the Seawolf bats stayed quiet for the first three innings as CSUDH carried a 1-0 lead into the fourth. Eli Rimes tied the game with a solo homer with one out in the fourth and Leo Avila gave the Seawolves the lead later on in the inning with a sac bunt RBI.
SSU made it 4-1 in the fifth when Tyler Wightman scored on a Rimes double play and Eli Bridges knocked in a run on a single to center. The game was broken open with a B.J. Collom RBI double in the sixth and a David Adler RBI single in the seventh.
Matt Bush earned the win, improving to 3-1 on the year. Paige Dumont was credited with his fifth save of the season after pitching a solid 2.1 innings out of the pen.
The series concludes tomorrow with a single game at 11:00 am.
