Seawolves Shut Out Argonauts Twice

Claire Hiney had six hits to lead the Seawolves on Wednesday afternoon
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  The Sonoma State softball team looked impressive on Wednesday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of Notre Dame de Namur.  The Seawolves won game one 7-0 before taking the nightcap 5-0.  In all, the Seawolf pitchers allowed just four hits to the Argonauts as SSU improves to 13-15 on the year.  NDNU falls to 7-25.

The Seawolves scored in the first inning of game one, then plated a couple more runs in the third to make it 3-0.  In the fourth, Sonoma State was able to blow things open with three hits and some shrewd base running.  Eager to take the extra base, the Seawolves frustrated the Argo defense and scored three runs to make it 6-0.  The Seawolves would tack on one more run in the fifth when Alex Bright singled, then came around to score on a wild pitch.

Sonoma State starter Lindsay Emmel was fantastic, allowing just two hits and striking out seven through five shutout innings.  Brittany Williams pitched a perfect final two innings to close the door.  Claire Hiney led the Seawolves with three hits and Alex Winters, Melissa Calvin, and Ashley Eisemann (SSU's 3-4-5 hitters) each had a pair of hits as well.

In game two the Seawolves got a run in the third when Simone Brandalise scored on a wild pitch, one of five on the day by NDNU.  SSU put the game out of reach in the fourth as they scored four runs to make it a 5-0 lead.  The big hit was a two-run single by Alex Winters with two out.

Just as Emmel had in the first game, Simone Brandalise absolutely shut down the Argonaut bats.  The freshman went 5.1 innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven.  She didn't walk a batter either as she improves to 4-6 on the year.

Hiney had three more hits to raise her season average to a team-high .345.  Alex Bright had two hits and Alex Winters drove in two.

The Seawolves hit the road this weekend to face Humboldt State and Western Oregon.  It is the start of nearly a month long road trip.
