ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Tyrese McDaniel singled to right field to score B.J. Collom with the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday afternoon as Sonoma State took the series opener against Grand Canyon, 2-1. The win propels the Seawolves to 17-5 on the season. The Antelopes dive to 13-11.
At 17-5, the Seawolves are off to the second best start in school history. The 2002 team was 19-3 after 22 games.
McDaniel and Collom accounted for both Sonoma State runs on Friday afternoon. With Collom on third in the third inning, McDaniel drove him home on a grounder to second base to give SSU a 1-0 lead. Grand Canyon tied it up when Tristan Blalock doubled down the left field line to plate Giancarlo Silvestri in the fourth. In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs and Collom at second, McDaniel lined the ball to right field, just past a diving Antelope right fielder for the game winner.
Travis Babin picked up the win for Sonoma State. In just his second collegiate pitching appearance, the sophomore tossed one and two-thirds scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out two. Babin was SSU's starting third baseman last year.
Bryan Oland went five innings for the Seawolves, allowing one run and lowering his ERA to 2.09. He struck out five batters and surrendered seven hits.
Brian Broderick went the first six for GCU before yielding to Josiah Ziegler, who was tagged with the loss.
The series continues tomorrow with a doubleheader set for 11:00 am.
