ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State swept Grand Canyon in a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Seawolf Diamond by scores of 3-2 and 5-2. The wins run SSU's winning streak to six in a row and 16 of their last 18 as they improve to 19-5 on the year. The Antelopes drop to 13-13.
At 19-5, the Seawolves are off to their second best start ever. The 2002 team was 20-4 after 24 games.
Grand Canyon busted out for two runs in the first inning of game one when catcher Dan Colella plated a pair with a single down the left field line. SSU countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first on a Tyrese McDaniel RBI fielder's choice. The Seawolves tied it up in the seventh when Nick Nosti scampered home on a wild pitch.
For the second consecutive game, the Seawolves found a clutch hit in the bottom of the ninth to win the game. On Saturday it was Ian Bridges who lined a single to left field to score Brandon Zenimura. Particularly frustrating for GCU was the fact that Zenimura reached on an error and the winning hit came with two outs.
After the first inning, the Seawolf pitchers shut down the Antelope hitters, allowing eight hits, but no more runs. Brent Lysander went the first five, allowing eight hits and striking out six before turning it over to Kenny Cook and Paige Dumont, the eventual winning pitcher. David Adler led SSU with three hits.
In game two, the Antelopes again got on the board in the first inning when Dan Colella drove in Craig Daniel on a ground out. SSU tied it up in the fourth when Jason Buhagiar doubled, then came around to score on a David Adler ground out. The Seawolves took the lead the following inning on a Chase McGuire run scoring double. Not content to beat GCU by a single run for the third game in a row, the Seawolves got some breathing room in the sixth with three runs, to take a 5-1 lead. Tyrese McDaniel delivered the big hit with a two-run double to left field.
GCU was able to get one run back in the ninth, but Dumont closed the door on them. Taylor Lewis earned the win after a solid seven strikeout in five inning performance. SSU managed just four hits in the game, but they held Grand Canyon to just three.
The Seawolves go for the series sweep tomorrow morning at 11:00 am..
