ARCATA, Calif. - One day after dropping a 7-6 decision to Western Oregon, the Sonoma State softball team responded with 13 hits, including six extra-base hits, and nine runs to drop the Western Oregon Wolves 9-6 Sunday morning in the day two opener of the Al Cooper Tournament hosted by Humboldt State.
The Seawolves (14-19 overall, 5-11 CCAA) blasted two homeruns, three doubles and a triple. Sophomore second baseman, Alex Winters, led the charge going a perfect 4-for-4 with with a double, triple, two stolen bases and two RBIs.
Freshmen
Ashley Eisemann and
Simone Brandalise also homered for their only hits of the game. Claire Hiney and
Shyrle Hawes recorded two hits and a each doubled.
Lindsay Emmel started the game and got into some trouble in the third inning. With a 6-0 lead, Western Oregon scored five funs on six hits to cut the lead to 6-5. In the fourth inning,
Brittany Williams (5-3) came in relief and held the Wolves to one run on three hits to pick up the win.
After scoring a run in the first inning, Sonoma State used back-to-back home runs from Eisemann and Brandalise to cap a five-run third inning. After the Wolves answered back wih five of their own in the bottom half of the frame, Sonoma State tallied three more in the top of the fourth. Consecutive doubles by Hawes and Winters to started the rally. Winters then advanced to third and stole home for the second run of the inning. Melissa Calvin later scored on a sacrafice fly by Eisemann to push the lead to 9-5.
Sonoma State is back in action this afternoon when they face tournament host, No. 9 Humboldt State, at 3:00 pm for the fourth and final time this weekend. It will mark the seventh time this season the two have met.
