ROHNERT PARK, Calif- Sonoma State completed a sweep over Grand Canyon with their seventh consecutive win on Sunday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The Seawolves won 4-1 behind a stellar pitching performance by Matt Bush. The win pushes the Seawolves' record to 20-5 on the year while GCU falls to 13-14.
At 20-5, the Seawolves have tied their best ever start after 25 games. The 2002 squad was also 20-5 at this point in the season. SSU has now won seven in a row and 15 of their last 17 games dating back to February 24th.
Grand Canyon scored one run off starter Matt Bush, though even that run was not without controversy. With two outs and a runner on third base, Dan Colella lined a ball to center field that it looked like SSU's B.J. Collom caught on a dive. The teams cleared the field before the umpires met in the middle of the diamond and, several minutes later, came to the conclusion that Collom did not catch the ball. The runner at third was advanced home and the inning continued.
That would be one of just four hits allowed on the day by Bush and reliever Nick O'Brien. Bush was magnificent, yielding three hits and striking out seven on his way to his fourth win of the year. O'Brien pitched three scoreless innings for his first save.
Sonoma State got all of their runs in the fifth inning. After David Adler was hit by a pitch, SSU got three consecutive singles by Brandon Zenimura, Collom, Chase McGuire, and Tyrese McDaniel. The rally was capped by a run scoring double by Eli Rimes.
Sonoma State will return to conference play next weekend when they meet up with rival San Francisco State. Friday and Sunday's single games are at SF State while SSU hosts a doubleheader on Saturday.
