Seawolves Take Opener From UCSD, 4-2

Bryan Oland struck out 11 Tritons on Friday afternoon
ROHNERT PARK, Calif-  Bryan Oland went a solid eight innings to lead Sonoma State to a 4-2 win over UC San Diego in the opener of a four-game series on Friday afternoon in Rohnert Park.  Oland struck out 11 and  walked none as he improves to 3-0 on the year.  The win pushes SSU's record to 10-3 overall and 5-0 in the CCAA.  UCSD drops to 11-6, 3-2 CCAA.

Oland allowed just five hits and one run, though because he's been pitching so well, his ERA actually went up to 1.00.  The junior from Santa Ana has allowed just three runs in 27 innings of work this year.

The win was also the 699th of head coach John Goelz's career.  He will have two chances for No. 700 tomorrow against UCSD.

On Friday, SSU got on the board in the fourth inning when Eli Rimes hit a two-run home run to right field, his second round tripper of the year.  They made it 3-0 later in the inning when Ian Bridges came around to score on an error by first baseman Scott Clement.

SSU pushed the lead to 4-0 in the sixth when B.J. Collom doubled to left field, scoring Bridges.  The Tritons picked up their first run in the seventh inning after Chris Franco scampered home from third on a wild pitch.  Franco reached on a one-out triple to center field.

UCSD was able to score one more run in the ninth and put the tying run at the plate, but Paige Dumont retired the side to pick up his third save of the year.

The teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow, starting at 11:00 am.
