SAN FRANCISCO, Calif- Sonoma State ran its winning streak to eight in a row with a 5-3 win over San Francisco State in the series opener on Friday afternoon in San Francisco. The series moves to Rohnert Park for a doubleheader tomorrow before concluding on Sunday at SF State. With the win, the Seawolves improve to 21-5, 11-2 CCAA while the Gators drop to 5-21, 4-13 CCAA.
At 21-5, the Seawolves are off to their best start in school history. The 2002 team was 20-5 after 25 games, but they lost their 26th.
On Friday, Bryan Oland (W, 5-0) continued his mastery on the mound with a seven-inning effort that resulted in his fifth win of the year. Paige Dumont closed out the game with 1.2 no-hit innings to earn his sixth save of the season. Just 26 games into the season, Dumont's save total is already tied for sixth in school history.
Tyler Wightman led SSU with two hits and two runs scored. Tyrese McDaniel drove in three runs and Chase McGuire and Nick Nosti each had RBIs as well.
SSU didn't waste any time on Friday, scoring a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. McDaniel had a sacrifice fly and McGuire followed him with an RBI single. SF State made it 2-1 in the third before McDaniel tacked on another run with another sac fly in the fourth.
Single runs in the seventh and eighth made it 5-1 and though the Gators rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth off Oland, the Seawolves were able to close it out.
The Seawolves and Gators will meet in a doubleheader on Saturday at Seawolf Diamond. First pitch is set for 11:00 am.
